How Do Air Purifiers Work?

Posted by Stacey Stultz on Feb.20, 2008

Searching for the perfect air purifier can be overwhelming with the many types of filters and the numerous brands to choose from. When considering which air purifier is perfect for your home, it is important to know about the different cleaning methods air purifiers use.

Air purifiers are an ever changing technology and the best manufactures are constantly improving the science. Here’s a quick run down on how the most popular air purifies do their job:

  • A pre-filter will remove large particles.
  • True HEPA filters captures dust, pollen, pet dander and micro-organisms such as mold, fungal spores, bacteria and viruses. Try to avoid HEPA-type filters as they have been shown to be less effective than genuine HEPA filters.
  • Activated carbon filters will remove household odors (cooking and pets) as well as dangerous VOC gases.
  • Some air purifies electro-statically charge the particles for easy collection.
  • Other air purifiers reverse particle charge so that they fall to the floor.
  • Germicidal ultra violet light removes micro-organisms and various VOC gases.
  • Some children and adults are sensitive to ozone produced by certain air purifiers. If this is your family, make sure you read product details carefully and call the manufacturer before buying.
