Thanks to GreenHalloween.org, the green Halloween movement has been growing every year.

This year Green Halloween and Kiwi Magazine have joined together and started something new.

National Costume Swap Day.

What is National Costume Swap Day?

It’s a day for friends, families, organizations or communities to get together, gather up old Halloween costumes and accessories that no longer fit or are no longer wanted and swap them with other people for new costumes.

It’s the ultimate in green Halloween costume recycling. Give away your old costumes and get something new for your kids- all without spending a dime.

National Costume Swap Day this year is Saturday October 9, 2010.

Join in one of the swaps already scheduled or organize your own swap. Schedule a private swap in your home with family or friends or organize a swap at your local church or school that anyone can attend.

Why swap?

According GreenHalloween.org if just half the Halloween costumes kids wear at Halloween are swapped landfill waste could be reduced by 6250 tons- that’s equal to the weight of 2500 midsize cars!

If you are interested in participating in or organizing a Costume Swap visit www.greenhalloween.org/costumeswap/ or email Ghazal@GreenHalloween.org

In addition to costume swaps be aware that there are many other ways to go green this Halloween: buy/hand out organic candy, give out non-candy treats, ditch the plastic and trick or treat with reusable bags, go DIY on decorations with things you already have, decorate with energy saving LED lights, make your own costumes out of things in your home, and don’t buy cheap plastic toys and Halloween items.

For many other ways to go green including DIY ideas, crafty how to’s, party ideas, fun slogans, eco tricks and treats, candy alternatives and much more at www.GreenHalloween.org.
