Most Fruit Snacks Contain Virtually No Fruit at All

Most snacks and drinks claiming to be fruit-flavored contain no fruit at all, while most of the rest contain only minimal quantities, according to a study conducted by the British nonprofit Food Commission.

“Shoppers need to check the small print in the ingredients if they want to know whether they actually contain any fruit, because the actual content can be non-existent,” said Food Commission spokesperson Ian Tokelove. “Food manufacturing is highly competitive. If companies can cut their costs and increase profits by using flavoring, they are liable to do so. Consumers won’t always realize they are being duped.

Researchers analyzed the contents of 28 strawberry-flavored products sold in U.K. stores, and found that less than 40 percent of them contained any fruit at all. Of the 11 products that did contain strawberries, five of them contained less than one percent real fruit.

The product with the highest strawberry content, at 6 percent, was a Ribena strawberry juice drink. In addition, each juice box contained 31.4 grams of sugar, or nearly eight teaspoons. (continue reading…)

‘Secretive’ Chemicals Being Hidden in Food Under ‘Artificial Flavors’ Label

By Green Diva Mom on Dec.14, 2008, under Food, Nutrition & Recipes, Reading Labels

by Jennifer McKinley from NaturalNews.com

You Thought MSG Was Bad? At least they admit that it’s in there… well, mostly. Have you picked up a can of soup lately and noticed that the sodium levels are lower? Seen a label that said, “No MSG”? How about realizing that there is less sugar on the label of your favorite ice cream? Believe it or not, this is cause for concern.

This article has been especially hard to compose. “Why?”, you may ask. There is simply not much information to be found on the subject. It has taken weeks of internet research to uncover the smidgeon of information that has been acquired.

A relatively young company, Senomyx, may be responsible for the sodium and sugar levels falling in your favorite grocery store item. How are they doing this without affecting the taste? The truth is, they may be putting chemicals into your food right now without you even realizing it and without telling you.

And guess what? They don’t have to.

Senomyx has contracted with Kraft, Nestle, Coca Cola, Campbell Soup to put a chemical in foods that masks bitter flavors by turning off bitter flavor receptors on the tongue and enhancing salty and sweet flavors. This would allow the companies to tout claims such as “less sugar” or “lower sodium” by reducing the actual sugar and/or salt by approximately half, but the foods will retain the same level of sweetness or saltiness when they touch the tongue by fooling your brain. Kellogg Ban

By Stacey Stultz on Dec.14, 2008, under Food, Nutrition & Recipes, Reading Labels

Which would you prefer to feed your family- sugar the way nature intended or sugar from a genetically modified plant that is capable of withstanding massive doses of weed killer? Apparently, Kellogg’s President David MacKay thinks he knows your answer. In a letter sent to Organic Consumer’s Association dated June 27, 2008 he indicated that the US market does not care whether or not GE ingredients are used. So, GE sugar beets will be added to Kellogg products this year. He also said that Europe does not want GE foods, so they will not receive GE foods.

Organic Consumer’s Association and allies are calling for a ban on all Kellogg products to send a message that the US does not want untested and unlabeled GE foods slipped into our foods.

What Does “GMO” Mean?

By Eleni Prokopeas on Nov.04, 2008, under Food, Nutrition & Recipes, Reading Labels

Source: The George Mateljan Foundation

“GMO” stands for “Genetically Modified Organisms,” and in the case of food, it usually refers to foods which have been genetically engineered for reasons unrelated to health or nourishment. You may also see the term “GE foods” (which stands for “genetically engineered” foods) or terms like “genetically altered” or “genetically modified” or “genetically improved” to describe these foods.

The process of genetically modifying foods is very new to the world of agriculture. In 1994, there were zero acres of GE food crops in the entire United States. At present there are more than 100 million acres! The Center for Food Safety, a non-profit public interest and environmental advocacy group headquartered in Washington, D.C., estimates that 70-75% (continue reading…)

Interview with Dr. Russell Blaylock on devastating health effects of MSG, Aspartame and Excitotoxins

The information in this interview is crucial to your family’s health. Deceptive advertising by food manufactures keeps you as a customer while unaware of the true danger of there ingredients. Please read carefully labels and stay away from these ingredients. Personally, I prefer to limit package products and only buy organic to be assured of the ingredients. (continue reading…)
