Whole Body Detox, Part 3: Far-Infrared Saunas

By Mary Laredo on Mar.19, 2009, under Detox For Health, Health & Fitness

The first two parts of this series examined the health advantages of lymphatic cleansing with rebound exercise, and fasting for the removal of toxic build-up and internal purification. A third method of detoxification is through the regular use of a far-infrared sauna. The benefits of these three stand-alone practices are exponential when combined and integrated into a healing regimen or health maintenance program. Any healing protocol should also include an ample supply of whole foods. Such a comprehensive program advances the healing process and counters the effects of living in a toxic world.

Far infrared rays are part of the sun’s natural spectrum. The radiant energy produced by an infrared sauna is the same as heat from the sun, with the exclusion of the ultraviolet rays. A heat source, (usually ceramic heating elements), emits infrared waves that penetrate and relax the body as increased blood circulation warms the skin. A flood of sweat and toxins is released through the skin’s open pores as the warm blood circulates deeper throughout the body. (continue reading…)

Whole Body Detox, Part 2: Fasting

By Mary Laredo on Mar.12, 2009, under Detox For Health, Health & Fitness

The challenge of maintaining or rebuilding health in an increasingly polluted world can be facilitated with a variety of cleansing methods that rejuvenate the body, mind and spirit. Part 1 of this series focused on lymphatic cleansing with rebound exercise. Daily exercise, and rebounding in particular, is a vital component of a healing regimen, as it helps to oxygenate and strengthen the body while cleansing lymph nodes and flushing the lymphatic system.

Periodic fasting of one to ten days (or longer for experienced fasters) is a time-tested practice that furthers cleansing of the day-to-day pollutants from food and the environment, and also releases deeply held toxins that have been stored within bodily tissues for years or decades. It’s an invaluable means of augmenting the cleansing initiated by other methods such as exercise and an alkaline diet. (continue reading…)

With each passing decade since the end of World War II our planet has become silently, yet increasingly, toxic as pollutants from pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, industrial chemicals and other residual offenders choke the land, water and air that sustain us. As our planet becomes dangerously congested with debris so do our bodies, as evidenced by the alarming rate of deaths due to preventable illness and disease. We are neither helpless nor hopeless in this dire state, and just as we can strive to minimize our imprint on the planet, we can also take measures to reduce, eliminate and cleanse toxins from the blood, tissues and organs of our bodies. One of several effective methods of detoxification is through lymphatic cleansing. (continue reading…)

The set up for a brew and bottle method of Kombucha tea making is very similar to the continuous brew method. The major difference is that you drain and bottle your tea monthly. Many people prefer this method because they can make just enough for one person.

Sterility is extremely important in this method because pouring from container to container makes a lot of surface area vulnerable. Always wash your hands and use fresh utensils when handling your kombucha set-up. (continue reading…)

Kombucha: Elixir of Life, Part 1

By Danielle Downs on Feb.09, 2009, under Detox For Health, Drinks, Supplements

kombuchaThe Taoists Immortals were said to have discovered a recipe for an “elixir of life” that, once swallowed, granted their immortality. Ancient writings describe quicksilver and other frightening mercurial brews that ascetics drank with no luck. The kombucha “mushroom” drink, a beverage of Asian and Russian origins, could be this fabled elixir of life. For anyone interested in detox, rapid healing, or a tonic for chronic conditions, this beverage might be for you.

Kombucha (pronounced in an infinite number of ways) is called a mushroom but it is not. It’s a SCOBY, a Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast. Perhaps the mushroom association is because of the mushroom “look” or because yeast is part of the fungus family. Either way, the living culture floats in a mixture of sugar sweetened tea while it grows. As the cultures eats up the sugar in the tea, it releases powerful probiotics, enzymes, minerals, and nutrients. Strands of the culture will mix into the liquid and can be ingested with the tea. The large “mushroom” itself can be eaten either soft or dried like jerky. (continue reading…)

Childhood Asthma: Could Bleach and Tap Water Make Your Child Sick?

By Danielle Downs on Jan.26, 2009, under Detox For Health, Green Cleaning, Health Alerts, Healthy Water, Home Environment

girldrinkingglassofwaterThe increase in asthma cases illustrates the relationship between the sensitivity of small children and the increased use of petrochemicals and toxic household products. Asthma is an all too common problem in children. EPA reports that since 1980, the biggest growth in asthma cases has been in children under five. Understanding the causes of asthma illustrates the direct relationship between indoor air quality and health.

Chlorine has been linked to childhood and adult asthma. Chlorine, when combined with organic substances such as skin particles, hair follicles, water-borne bacteria, and even sweat and urine, forms a dangerous family of compounds known as Trihalomethanes (THMs). Prolonged inhalation of all levels of THMs and such chlorine gases as those found near an indoor swimming pool, will not only cause asthma, but will irritate the sensitive areas in the eyes, nose, and throat, as well. Amazingly, the chemicals found near indoor pools constitute only about 1/4 of the chemical vapors that result from showering in chlorinated water.

Quick and Easy Ways to Becoming Greener . . .

Quick and Easy Ways to Becoming Greener from the Inside Out

Get more raw veggies and fruits into each meal. This will not only crowd out the nutritionally deficient foods but will provide your body with powerful nutrients and vitamin complexes as well.
