Over the past couple of years a lot of eco-friendly cleaning products have hit the market. I’ve had the chance to try some of them. Some of them are okay, some are alright and others don’t work at all.
Here’s a list of some of the products that did work and worked really well. Products that I absolutely love and feel safe using. They are eco and they work. As an added bonus, some of them even smell good.
If you need a carpet cleaner or upholstery spotter to get out tough stains then Eco Mist Solutions Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning Spray is one to try. It is made with: non-chlorinated water, corn, tree sap, processed coconut extract, potatoes, soy, grains and grass. Eco Mist Solutions Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning Spray works great without leaving any toxic fumes behind or any sticky soapy residue on the carpet or furniture. A big bonus for Eco Mist… no brown spots on my furniture. I love it. I can spot clean my sofa and loveseat and not worry about brown rings. On light colored furniture many products leave cellulosic browning stains behind- not Eco Mist.
Another great eco brand that I have tried is Better Life. I am in love with Better Life’s whatEVER! clary sage and citrus multipurpose cleaner. It cleans anything and everything and does it really well. The whatever spray lives up to its promises by cleaning whatever you need it to…naturally and with a very pleasant mild citrusy scent.
Better Life’sSimply Floored and 2 am Miracle are also on my green cleaning favorites list. Simply Floored will leave your floors clean and clear with no sticky residue while the 2 am Miracle is gently enough to use in baby’s room yet strong enough to clean up any of the disgusting messes a little one can make.
If you’re looking for strong cleaning power with no nasty chemicals EcoStore USA products are the ones to try. EcoStore was originally a New Zealand based company but now they also have home base in the US, in Michigan. They have a line of products they created exclusively for Michigan based Meijer stores as well as their complete line of ecostore USA products sold which are online and in other stores.
My favorite ecostore USA product is the eucalyptus laundry liquid followed by a close second tie of their toilet bowl cleaner and the citrus cleaning spray. These are my three favorite ecostore products because they all pack a cleaning punch while being natural. They even smell good if you like herbal aromas.
One more fabulous eco-cleaning brand I have tried is EcoDiscoveries.
Their nursery cleaner is quite amazing- gentle yet tough. Let me tell you how gentle it is- I got squirted in the eye accidentally with the nursery cleaner and it didn’t even burn. Water stings my eyes yet this stuff didn’t. Now that’s gentle. Yet unbelievably even being that gentle it cleans like you wouldn’t believe. Because it is so gentle you can use it on just about anything- carpet, upholstery, baby seats, changing tables…anything you need to clean that needs a gentle touch.

I am working on my 2011 New Years goal of being more green. I have a concern regarding using green cleaning products instead of bleach (which I use all the time), I want to make sure that bacteria is killed while I am cleaning. Do you know if these cleaning products do that? I really want to give up my bleach.

Autumn, in place of bleach you can use hydrogen peroxide to kill of bacteria. That or vinegar will kill everything it touches!
Hope that helps.

Thank you for the article, Wenona. There are a ton of green cleaning articles out there, but it is nice to get a clear recommendation of specific products from someone who has actually tested them.
I especially appreciated the story about EcoDiscoveries’ nursery cleaner - our green cleaning company uses similar “gentle” green products that are actually safe (if not pleasant) for human consumption.
